The attribution machine

Humility, audited

'I got lucky.' 'Right place, right time.' 'I interview well — they'll figure it out.' Each of these sounds modest, reasonable, even virtuous. And applied to one success, each is genuinely plausible. Luck exists. Timing matters. Charm is real.

Here's what your gut is hoping you won't notice: it isn't applying these to one success. It's applying them to all of them. And that changes the claim entirely.

The pattern-level problem

One lucky project is plausible. Two, sure. But a career — years of projects landing, reviews holding up, clients returning, promotions arriving from different bosses at different companies with different standards — explained by *luck*? Run the numbers honestly. Luck is, by definition, the thing that doesn't repeat on demand. A twelve-year lucky streak wouldn't make you a fraud; it would make you the statistically strangest person alive. The boring explanation is competence.

Same audit for the others. 'Right timing' — for a decade, across markets and managers? 'I fooled them' — dozens of experienced people, independently, all fooled, none of them ever comparing notes? That's not an explanation; it's a conspiracy theory in which the only conspirator is you.

Why the machine feels right anyway

Because it runs on speed, not evidence. The gut attribution fires in milliseconds; it's never once been asked to defend itself at the pattern level. It explains each win *individually* — one lucky break at a time — and never has to face the absurdity of the collection. That's the machine's whole trick: it works retail, never wholesale.

What we do about it

Not arguing — auditing. Starting next week, the ledger runs a cause analysis on each win: what you did before, during, after; what would not have happened without you. Retail examination, one win at a time — the machine's own turf. The pattern will assemble itself from your answers, not from anything I claim. Until then: keep logging, verbatim. The specimens are the point.
