The spotlight, stuck

Attention works like a spotlight. It can only light so much at once, and whatever it lands on gets brighter, bigger, sharper — while everything outside the beam dims. In body-image distress, that spotlight has jammed onto one feature. Skin, nose, hair, symmetry, size — it doesn't matter which. What matters is that it's stuck there, at high magnification.

Under magnification, *anything* looks wrong. Put your own hand two centimetres from your eyes and it becomes a landscape of pores and lines and asymmetries. That isn't your hand being defective. That's what close-up plus a spotlight does to any surface on earth. The zoom manufactures flaws — not because they're there in some special way, but because that's what zoom does.

Why the mirror always 'confirms' it

Here's the trap that keeps people stuck for years. When you go to the mirror worried about the feature, you don't see your face the way another person does — a whole face, in a glance, in motion. You go looking feature-first: you find the spot, you lock on, you inspect at magnification. And of course you find what you went looking for, magnified. The mirror feels like evidence. It's actually just the spotlight, handed a surface.

So the mirror can never settle it. Every check goes feature-first, every check magnifies, every check 'confirms.' The tool isn't lying — it's just being aimed by a jammed spotlight.

The whole, lost

The cruelest part: while the beam is pinned on one feature, the rest of you falls off the edge of the frame. Other people see the whole — your face in motion, your expression, you. You see a magnified fragment and mistake it for the picture. We're not going to debate the fragment. We're going to widen the frame and unstick the beam. That's the work.
